Lakeland Community College welcomes trustee to board

Lake County commissioners have unanimously appointed Kenneth Michael Benz to the Lakeland Community College Board of Trustees.

Three of the school’s trustees are appointed by the governor, and six are appointed by the commissioners.

ho vacated the seat when he was appointed Lake County commissioner Jan. 6.
Officials confirmed the term runs through March 6, 2030.
Benz serves as an executive advisor at Ciuni and Panichi, Inc., a CPA firm, providing clients with strategic planning and business development expertise.
Additionally, he serves as affiliate director for Fifth Third Bank, Northeast Ohio, and as vice chairman of ReCreation Partners, a retained executive search firm specializing in human resources, finance, and operations services.
“We are delighted to have Mr. Benz on our board,” said Lakeland President Sunil Ahuja. “He brings a wealth of experience and knowledge, and given his interest in higher education and workforce training, Mike will be a valued addition.”
Benz served as president and CEO of United Way of Greater Cleveland for more than 17 years, during which the organization raised more than $732 million to support health and human services in the community.
During his tenure, the nonprofit launched GuitarMania, the public art project that raised more than $2 million, and, in 2008, implemented a new approach to funding programs grounded in research and designed to “move the needle” on persistent community issues.
“As a community college, Lakeland is always evolving in ways to best serve the citizens of Lake County and those with a vested interest in our graduates,” said Board Chairman Paul Rupert. “Mike’s guidance will be a great addition to those conversations.”
Before his time at United Way, Benz worked for 24 years with the Greater Cleveland Growth Association.
In addition to Lakeland, he also serves on the Cleveland Clinic Board of Directors, the Leadership Center Board of Directors and the Executive Committee.
He also chairs the South Pointe Hospital board, a Cleveland Clinic facility.
Benz said he’s eager to contribute to the college’s efforts to provide quality education.
