Florists busiest week of the year
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — For the couples marking another anniversary, this may feel like an other Valentine’s Day, but one Indianapolis flower shop is facing its first ever Valentine’s Day.
SoBro Flower Co. just opened in June. Hundreds of flowers, greens
, bows, and vases arrive well ahead of time, so staff can prepare.
Floral Designer Tess Houston said, “Working in the evenings, making sure vases have greens in them, so as we get orders and designs that need to be put together we can just pop them in the vases. We make sure all of the stems are clean and all the bows are prepped. It sounds silly, but it helps a lot.”
The florists told News 8 that they have emptied over 100 buckets of flowers this week, making dozens of arrangements. Of course, red roses still dominating the majority of their orders. They say the day before the holiday, was actually busier than Valentine’s Day itself.
“With Valentine’s Day being on a weekend, it definitely throws a different spin on our deliveries and how many people come in. I think people want to send flowers to people’s workplaces and it being on a Saturday made Friday our busiest day,” said floral designer Philip Bailey-Cox.
Bailey-Cox says the trickiest part of the holiday this year was figuring out how much inventory to buy, as this is the shop’s first Valentine’s Day.
“Our owners John and Stephanie began over a month ago, trying to figure out how many roses, how many of each color, how many greens to order…That’s a big process because you don’t want to over order and have things go bad, but you don’t want to under order and have to send people away,” said Bailey-Cox.
Despite the long hours, staff says the reward comes with each pickup.
“Really just enjoying each other as we are preparing to spread joy and love with others,” said Houston.
“I love being able to be creative and design something that I know is going to make somebody happy,” said Bailey-Cox.
