Two diverse opinions concerning the protests of ICE agents and their actions were published in the editorial section of the Park Record on Feb. 7. One well-written opinion defended the right to protest, but recommended that the protesters be orderly, peaceful and well-dressed.  The other op inion defended ICE actions and recommended that every “Tom, Ahmed, and Carlos” who seek accommodations that might influence a change in American culture be removed from this country.   As the comedian Yakov Smirnoff said: “What a country.” In America, under the First Amendment to the Constitution, each of these opinions should be allowed to be published and respected. Hopefully, there will be no attempts to change this. What seems to be missing in each of the letters to the editor was any mention of the disgusting Gestapo-like tactics that ICE agents are using to remove people who are in this country, some legally, some illegally. We should never forget that these are human beings, some are children, who are being hunted down and brutally arrested, sometimes with fatal results.  I am not suggesting that alien criminals should be allowed to stay here, but our legal system was founded on “due process,” which is being ignored.     Protecting our borders, organizing and controlling immigration is important. But remember what Ronald Reagan said in his last speech as president on January 19, 1989, “anyone, from any corner of the Earth, can come to live in America and become an American.”  I hope that we as Americans can remember what makes this country so wonderful and successful is that our melting pot of cultures, ideas and talents contributes to our society and benefits all of us.
