San Jose city leaders are looking to improve late-night safety in the wake of two major downtown shootings. The shootings came after Super Bowl festivities were a huge cultural and financial success for San Jose, which is now shifting its sights to other high-profile sporting events in NCAA March Madness and the FIFA World Cup around the corner. “We know that well lit streets tend to be safer streets, so we think that’s some low-hanging fruit, as well as just looking at how SJPD and some of our other law enforcement agencies can help to better support that late-night period where people may have been drinking, their night’s coming to an end,” San Jose Councilman Anthony Tordillos said. “What can we do during that nighttime period?” Tordillos, who represents the downtown area, said police, the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office and city are already meeting to discuss improving late-night safety. The councilman is hosting a series of community meetings to address the safety issues. The first meeting will be held Saturday, Feb. 21, at Roy’s Station Coffee and Tea in Japantown.
