RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- Redistricting is in the hands of Virginia voters, for now.  That’s because the Supreme Court of Virginia says the April 21 redistricting referendum can move forward as planned, while the Court considers the legality of Democrats' redistricting efforts.  The court is con sidering an appeal from Democrats after a lower court in Tazewell ruled Democrats' redistricting efforts were illegal.  “I think the Virginia Supreme Court made the right choice, made the right decision,” House Speaker Don Scott (D-Portsmouth) told 8News. PREVIOUSLY: Virginia Supreme Court allows Democrats’ redistricting vote to proceed “We’ve gotta win the referendum, and we gotta win in court,” said House Minority Leader Terry Kilgore (R-Scott), shortly after the courts’ decision became public.  That means voters will decide in April whether to give Democrats the power to implement their new proposed congressional map. That map features ten districts that favor Democrats and one that favors a Republican.  Governor Abigail Spanberger said the court’s decision is important so Virginians know exactly when they can make their voices heard.  “I am focused on having clarity for us to be able to communicate to people. It’s not necessarily an emotional issue for me,” Spanberger told 8News.  Meanwhile, both Scott and Kilgore say they’re confident their side will prevail in court, but admit that now, redistricting is in the hands of voters.  “The Supreme Court basically said what we’ve said all along, which is that Virginia voters will and should have the final say in redistricting Virginia,” Scott said.  “We’re gonna make the case to Virginians that this is unfair, this is unprecedented, and quite frankly, it’s against the law,” Kilgore said. Given the timeline laid out by the court, any decision on the merits of the case will likely come after the referendum is over.  If voters approve of the referendum, the court’s decision will decide the fate of redistricting in Virginia.  ...read more read less
