No air quality alert issued after fire in Grays Ferry causes concern

Residents who live in the Grays Ferry neighborhood of Philadelphia were being urged to avoid the area or stay inside their homes after a fire caused a possible air quality issue on Thursday, according to the city’s Health Department.

The fire broke out at a junkyard
at the intersection of South 34th Street and Grey’s Ferry Avenue on Feb. 12, officials said.
As of 6:30 p.m., there is no known hazard in the air, but inspectors were working to collect samples for testing out of an abundance of caution.
The Heath Department shared these tips to protect yourself:
Avoid going outdoors as much as possible.
If you must go outside, avoid excessive activity, such as jogging or running, and wear a mask, if available.
Close all windows and doors to minimize air pollution in your home.
Recirculate air with fans to avoid bringing more air pollution into your home.
People with underlying illnesses should monitor for symptoms, including trouble breathing, nausea, and dizziness. If these symptoms occur, seek medical attention as soon as possible.
As of 10 p.m. on Thursday, NBC10 First Alert Weather meteorologist Robert Johnson said that there is currently no active air quality alerts for the area.
