In her Feb. 3 column, Jennifer Busto advocated for an amendment to the U.S. Constitution that would empower state officials to override federal laws under certain nebulous circumstances (“Time to amend U.S., isle constitutions,” Star-Advertiser, Island Voices). Given the significant political di fferences in our country today, does she really think it prudent to grant such authority to the 50 different states? Would she feel the same if a Democrat were in the White House, and calls for overriding federal laws are coming from Republican-controlled states? And why do we need such an amendment when there are already well- established procedures to challenge the constitutionality of a federal law through the judicial system? ...read more read less
