Welcome to the Game Thread. Veterans of the Game Thread know how we do things around here, but for all you newbies we have a few rules. Our community guidelines apply and basically say be cool, no personal attacks, don’t troll and don’t swear too much.
The news from yesterday was Wembanyama’s historic 40 point effort against the dregs of the Lakers, who barely put up a fight against the Spurs in a 136-108 blowout that could have been much worse for the home team had the Spurs not shown mercy by playing the bottom of their roster for most of the second half. One player who did not get on the court last night was Jeremy Sochan, and the today’s news possibly reveals the reason why. The Spur and Sochan have agreed to go their separate ways, and he is being released to play for another team for the rest of the season. Do widzenia, Jeremy, until we meet again. I’m sad that he’s leaving, but I’m happy the drama is over and he’s free to find a team where he’ll flourish as a player, because it wasn’t going to happen in San Antonio, for whatever reason.
Tonight, the Spurs are in San Francisco to face the Warriors, who are missing the services of Steph Curry for a while with knee soreness. Jimmy Butler is out for the season, and Kristaps Porzingis hasn’t yet played for the Warriors after being traded from the Hawks at the deadline. The Warriors still have enough healthy veteran players to cause the Spurs problems, and Draymond Green can change the game with his ability to play physical defense. Brandon Podziemski has a history of getting tangled up with the other players when he gets beat on defense, and it was one of those tangles that caused Victor’s extended absence from the lineup earlier this year. Stephon Castle is listed as questionable in the injury report, but I expect him to sit this one out, as the Spurs will be fine with Fox and Harper handing most of the guard minutes in the rotation.
This would be a great game for the Spurs to once again put the opponent away early and rest up the stars, as they will have an extended break before the next game, against the Suns on Thursday, February 19, in the Moody Center on the University of Texas campus in Austin. Although it’s part of the Rodeo Road Trip, it’s essentially (and officially) a home game for the Silver and Black, and it’s going to be super fun to watch. But first they need to take care of the Warriors tonight. GO SPURS GOO!!
Game Prediction:
In a surprise move, the Warriors sign Sochan before the game. They can’t officially complete the trade before tipoff, but he sits on the Warriors bench in street clothes and heckles the Spurs while they’re shooting free throws.
