Despite antiMusk protests, Tesla remains bestselling car in CA by a wide margin
Feb 11, 2026
(KRON) -- 2025 was filled with plenty of protests against Tesla CEO Elon Musk. Throughout California, crowds of people shouting out against the billionaire and his electric vehicle company -- even as far as urging Tesla owners to sell their vehicles.
Across the state, there have been multiple repor
ts of Teslas being vandalized in 2025. A Bay Area politician reported their Tesla being vandalized, and a Cybertruck was vandalized in Novato.
Despite all the anti-Musk rhetoric, Tesla remains, by far, the best-selling new car model in California for 2025.
According to a report from the California New Car Dealers Association (CNCDA)*, the Tesla Model Y outsold the second-best-selling vehicle, the Toyota RAV4, by more than 50,000 units.
The Model Y reigns as the best-selling new vehicle in California for the fourth straight year.

The Trump administration ended the $7,500 federal tax credit for new electric vehicle purchases -- something that benefited Tesla sales for years under Biden's presidency. The removal of this program hasn't helped with Tesla's year-over-year sales, which have declined.
"Tesla has a few advantages," CNCDA President Brian Maas said. "Tesla, as a brand, has a status, cache, so I think folks in certain parts of the Bay. Owning a Tesla is a thing. I think that's breaking down over time, especially given the political controversies surrounding Mr. Musk."
Although Tesla's overall sales are declining, Maas said Model Y and Model 3 sales remain strong because the automaker can focus all its efforts on just those two models. Musk announced that production for the Model S and X will end.

President Trump rolling back on EV-friendly initiatives by the Biden administration is "certainly not going to help" electric vehicle demand, according to Maas. That also includes building more electric vehicle charging stations nationwide.
Maas expects the leading EV automaker, Tesla, and similar companies' sales to decline. The auto industry expert says, about a decade ago, the Model S stood out from the competition but no longer -- citing that as a reason for the end of Model S and X production.
The auto industry expert says the Model S once stood out from the competition about a decade ago, but not anymore — a factor behind Tesla’s decision to end production of its two priceier, luxury models.
"They don't have the field to themselves any longer like they did 10 years ago," Maas said about Tesla. "They have to make decisions like any other automaker has to make. Maybe the Model S has outlived its usefulness in terms of attracting customers. It's no surprise the ones they kept are the Model Y and Model 3."
Toyota Remains Top-Selling Automaker in CA
Toyota remains the best-selling car company in the Golden State, even by a bigger margin than the year before. According to the CNCDA report published last month, there were 322,068 newly purchased Toyota vehicles registered in 2025 -- up from 288,680 in 2024.
Toyota has been the top seller in California for the 10th year in a row, according to the CNCDA reports dating back to 2016. Behind them for 2025 sales were Honda with 194,343 new units sold and Tesla with 179,656. Honda overtook Tesla as the second-best-selling automaker from the year prior.
"California generally looks favorably on import brands. Toyota has been number one for a long time. I think they've done a good job of producing vehicles that are reliable, relatively affordable and desirable among consumers. It's not a surprise their market share grows," Maas said. "Especially in light of the political dynamics (associated with Tesla), you can find whatever kind of vehicle you want in the Toyota lineup."

Maas' Biggest Takeaway from the 2025 New Care Sales Report?
Maas said, "Despite all the political dynamics, trends in the economy and everything else, California is still a fantastic market for new cars. We sell 1.6, 1.7 million new cars a year in our state. That's about one-eighth of all the new cars sold in this country. That's impressive."
