A Pennsylvania man was arrested in a murder-for-hire plot uncovered by the Upper Dublin Police Department this week with the help of an informant.
Police said they first heard of the plot when a man unexpectedly walked through their doors on Tuesday, Feb. 10.
This man became an informant for
the department and told them that Eric Berkowitz, 41, asked for his help and was looking to kill his ex-girlfriend and two men in her life after they broke up.
Berkowitz reached out to the man on Facebook Messenger on Feb. 10 and told him to come to his home in Dresher, Pennsylvania, where he laid out his plan to go to upstate New York to kill the three people, according to officials.
Part of the plan was to set his ex-girlfriend’s home on fire and shoot whoever walked out, officials explained.
During their meeting, Berkowitz showed off a gun and a loaded magazine, officials said.
Berkowitz was prepared to pay over $5,000 in cash for the help, the informant told police.
Police were told that the plan was to go the ex-girlfriend New York home on Thursday, Feb. 12 and once they had the tip they started to watch Berkowitz.
Then, while watching him, they saw Berkowitz get into an Uber on Feb. 11 so they stopped the car, officials said.
When asked, the Uber driver told police that the address was set for the one that matched the ex-girlfriend’s New York home.
Berkowitz was arrested and found to be carrying a large amount of money as well as a loaded gun, police said.
Berkowitz was charged with criminal solicitation of murder, attempted murder and other related charges.
While in court on Wednesday, Berkowitz remained silent as a public defender argued he should get bail.
The judge ordered that Berkowitz will be held without it after prosecutors argued no amount of money could keep people safe.
There is no attorney listed who could speak on behalf of Berkowitz.
