FISHERS, Ind. (WISH) – A trail of pink marks the path to Hailey Buzbee’s Celebration of Life. Cory and Cayden Meyers, father and son, spent their afternoon tying pink ribbons and bows along several streets leading to ITOWN Church for Buzbee’s family to see when they travel to the servic e for the 17-year-old on Thursday.  Pink was Hailey’s favorite color.  “We feel that we lost a member of our community. She was a sweetheart,” Cory said. “When a member of your community is taken away under these circumstances, or any circumstances, you want to help in any way you possibly can.”  Pink ribbons are a common sight in the Buzbee family’s neighborhood, wrapped on mailboxes, trees, and homes throughout the Fishers subdivision. It’s where prosecutors say 39-year-old Tyler Thomas picked Buzbee up, taking her to Ohio, where she was found dead.  The local charges filed against Tyler Thomas in Ohio have been dismissed in favor of the federal prosecution. Thomas had a hearing in federal court, Tuesday, for sexually exploiting a minor and traveling interstate with the intent to engage in illicit sexual conduct. He could face a total of 60 years in prison.  But Thomas has yet to be charged with murder.  Prosecuting documents claim Thomas talked to Buzbee over online games and messaging apps for more than a year. Conversations included in court documents show Thomas taking the conversation to violent or sexually suggestive topics, writing in one Snapchat exchange “I’m having very dark but stimulating thoughts… I was wondering how I would get away with it.” Investigators say Thomas admitted to picking Buzbee up at her home. Police say Buzbee left a note saying she had run away and asked for no one to search for her. “These kinds of things are actually going on and now we’ve lost a bright light in our community,” Cayden said. “What happened to her was horrible.” Thomas led police to her remains in Wayne National Forest. Hailey’s father, Beau Buzbee, thanked local police on social media, Wednesday, writing “Our family is deeply grateful… please know that as you continue to focus on justice for Hailey, the Pink Army for Hailey stands firmly behind you.” As the prosecution plays out, neighbors and strangers alike are showing support for the Buzbee family any way they can. The outpouring of support over Hailey’s tragic death, marked by the ever-present pink ribbons throughout the community, is just a small gesture to show how neighbors are wrapping their arms around the Buzbee family.  “We care for you, we love you, our hearts are with you,” Cory said. “We will continue to stand by you.” “God is watching over her,” Cayden said. “God is there, and now she’s an angel and is watching over you, too.” The Hocking County Prosecutor’s Office could choose to file murder charges in Ohio, which has the death penalty. But Ohio hasn’t executed a prisoner since 2018. An Indiana prosecutor tells News 8 it wouldn’t be unusual for local law enforcement to defer to federal agencies for a potential murder charge, because state action would likely have to wait for the federal case against Thomas to play out.  News 8 reached out to the Hocking County Prosecutor’s Office for comment and have yet to hear back.  The Celebration of Life Service is Thursday, Feb. 12, at 6 p.m. inside ITOWN Church, located at 12491 E. 136th St., Fishers, Indiana 46038. Doors open at 5 p.m. ...read more read less
