SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) -- An East Bay suburb has reclaimed the top spot as California’s safest city, an annual survey shows. Danville, located in the San Ramon Valley east of Oakland, was ranked as California’s No. 1 safest city for 2026, according to SafeWise. Last year, the online safety resour ce website ranked it No. 2., behind Rancho Santa Margarita, located in Southern California. The list’s top 10 includes one other Bay Area city that is found just south of Danville: San Ramon. San Ramon was ranked the No. 9 safest city in California for 2026, just as it was in 2025. The company also surveyed opinions on crime concerns across all 50 states. SafeWise wrote, “67% of Californians said they are highly concerned about violent crime happening to them. That's down from 72% the year before but much higher than the national average of 55%.” According to the survey, only residents of New York, Maryland, Louisiana and Illinois worry more about violent crime than Californians.
