Union sign American forward Agustin Anello
Feb 10, 2026
The Philadelphia Union added to its attacking depth Tuesday with the signing of American forward Agustin Anello.
Anello, 23, arrives from Uruguayan club Boston River. His contract is guaranteed through the 2028-29 season with an option for 2029-30.
Anello scored six goals and one assist in 14 matche
s in the Liga AUF Clausura tournament after three goals in 15 matches in the Apertura season.
He also played for Boston River in Copa Libertadores and Copa Sudamericana in 2025, with two goals in nine appearances combined. Overall, it’s 11 goals in 44 appearances for the club last year.
“Agustín is a versatile, dynamic attacker,” Union Head Coach Bradley Carnell said in a press release. “His development in Europe, combined with his recent breakout in Uruguay, reflects a clear upward trajectory. As a domestic player with U.S. Youth National Team experience, he fits our profile well, and we’re excited to welcome him to Philadelphia.”
Anello is young but well-traveled, thanks to an Italian passport that allowed him to jump to Europe as a youth player. He finished his youth training at the academies of Espanyol and Cornella in Spain, then Belgian club Lommel SK, where he turned pro.
He scored six goals and four assists in 18 matches in the second-division Challenger Pro League in 2022-23, his second pro season.
His highest experience is 219 minutes in the Eredivisie, the Dutch top division, with Sparta Rotterdam in 20. He’s played 130 matches and more than 6,000 minutes as a pro.
He hopped from Lommel to a loan stint with Croatian club Hajduk Split to Sparta, then off on loan to second-division Dutch club Cambuur before the move to Uruguay.
Anello was born in Hialeah, Florida. His parents are Argentinian and they moved to Spain when Anello was 10. He made two appearances for the United States’ Under-23 team in 2023.
The Union have a strong ties with Boston River: It signed Venezuelan forward Jose Riasco for Union II from the club in 2024, and Bruno Damiani scored 12 goals on loan at Boston River that year before the Union made him a club record signing in February 2025. Cambuur was the club with whom former Union midfielder and Rotterdam native Jamiro Monteiro turned pro.
Anello might be an odd tactical fit. The 6-0, 185-pounder is listed as a forward. He identifies as a left winger, a position that the Union don’t need in their stock 4-2-2-2 formation.
Along with Cavan Sullivan, he could provide the kind of attacking change-of-pace off the bench that the club has generally lacked in recent years.
