Norwegian biathlete Sturla Holm Lægreid confessed to cheating on his girlfriend in an interview moments after winning a bronze medal at the Milan Cortina Olympics on Tuesday.
The 28-year-old broke down in tears when speaking with Norwegian broadcaster NRK following his bronze medal performance i
n the men’s 20km individual biathlon competition.
“Six months ago I met the love of my life. The world’s most beautiful and nicest person,” he said, via The Associated Press and The Guardian. “And three months ago I made the mistake of my life and cheated on her, and I told her about that a week ago. This has been the worst week of my life.
“I had the gold medal in life, and I am sure there are many people who will see things differently, but I only have eyes for her. Sport has come second these last few days. Yes, I wish I could share this with her.”
Lægreid said he got support from home before his race and felt compelled to admit to his infidelity after the competition.
“I try to be a good role model and I did something stupid,” he said. “I got a nice video from the club at home and I used that as motivation today. As I said I want to be a good role model, but I have to admit when I get something wrong. You have to admit when you do something you can’t stand for and hurt someone you love so much.”
Lægreid did not share the name of his girlfriend, saying “she has had enough to deal with after last week.”
“I hope that there is light at the end of the tunnel for us both,” he said. “And that she can continue to love me.”
Lægreid is competing at his second Olympics after winning a gold medal with Norway in the men’s 4×7.5km relay at the 2022 Beijing Games. He also has seven world championships.
Lægreid was joined on the men’s individual podium by gold medal winner Johan-Olav Botn of Norway and silver medal winner Éric Perrot of France.
