LAKE COUNTY, Ind. (WISH) — An Indiana state trooper sustained serious injuries after being hit by a police car while approaching a police chase suspect.
The trooper has since been released from the hospital and is “expected to face a lengthy recovery.”
The incident started around 3
:30 a.m. Monday on Interstate 80/94 near Kennedy Avenue in Hammond, when Trooper Jace Hammond assisted the Lake County Sheriff’s Department with an active pursuit stemming from a traffic violation.
The suspect eventually exited the highway, and the chase continued through town.
At some point, the trooper successfully stopped the suspect vehicle with a PIT maneuver. But as Haddon crossed the way to approach the suspect, he was hit by another police car.
Haddon sustained serious injuries in the crash, ISP says, but will recover. “We are thankful that Trooper Haddon is expected to make a full recovery,” ISP Commander of Lowell Post Lt. Weems said.
ISP did not say if the suspect driver was arrested.
