The bridge spans the Detroit River between Detroit and Windsor, adding capacity to one of North America’s busiest trade routes. Canadian officials say the project, funded primarily by Canada at an estimated cost of $6.4 billion, is nearing completion and remains on track to open later this year.
The project is governed by legally binding agreements signed in 2012 and has long held bipartisan support in Michigan. The office of Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer responded by stating the bridge will open under the terms already in place.
