Molly Wasow Park, the city’s commissioner of social services, put in her resignation on Monday, the Daily News has learned. Park resigned after being informed she would not be staying on under the Mamdani administration, sources told The News. The administration has been interviewing other candida tes for the role since January, according to people familiar with the matter. “This limbo has been really taxing on the agency, on me and my family. I really think [the Department of Social Services] deserves and needs a permanent leader. So this is the right time,” Park told Gothamist, which first reported her resignation. She is expected to stay in the role through at least the end of the month. “We appreciate Commissioner Park’s years of service to the city, and the mayor looks forward to working with her through this transitional period.  We will be naming a new commissioner in the coming weeks,” Dora Pekec, a spokeswoman for Mamdani, said in a statement. DSS did not immediately comment on Park’s resignation. She was appointed to the role by ex-Mayor Adams in 2023 and has spent over 20 years in New York City government. The commissioner took over the department, which oversees the city’s homeless system, including street outreach, and cash, food aid and rental assistance programs, as the city was still dealing with the asylum seeker crisis, record-low housing vacancy rates and high numbers of cash assistance and SNAP applications. Under her leadership, the city opened more shelter beds, helped move 1,200 people from shelters into permanent housing and expanded cityFHEPS, the rental voucher program, to now more than 65,000 households. The news comes after the city has seen 18 deaths during a period of frigid temperatures. The Department of Social Services has played a public role in response to the weather, as the mayor has noted several of those who died had prior interactions with the city’s homeless services. Park is expected to testify at a City Council meeting Tuesday on the Mamdani administration’s response to the cold weather. ...read more read less
