Sunday, while Super Bowl LX was played at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, around a thousand people marched nearby, calling for federal immigration agents out of the Bay Area and out of communities nationwide. Several groups participating said this effort was organized, in part, because last yea r the Department of Homeland Security indicated that ICE agents would be sent to the Super Bowl. While federal and local leaders have since indicated that this would not be happening, concerns about potential immigration action still loom. People at this rally said they still wanted to send the message that ICE was not welcome here. Pan Garcia Breceda with the San Jose Community Service Organization said that more than 130 groups were participating in this protest. Garcia Breceda said that the people at this rally are “protesting, letting Kristi Noem know we will not stand by and let her threaten our community, we love our community, we are here for each other, always.” The group marched about a mile out near where the stadium is, then a mile back. “When people come from the East Coast, Boston area, or other places from around the world to watch the Super Bowl, hopefully they know this is what this area is about,” said Berlin Sudduth of Mountain View, who took part. ...read more read less
