Competing in any Olympics at just 17 years old is already difficult enough. Now imagine doing so with a broken arm. That was the circumstance for Oliver “Ollie” Martin, a 17-year-old snowboarder on Team USA. Martin competed in the men’s big air final on Saturday in Milan Cortina, and wa s the only American among the last 12. Unfortunately for the Colorado native who was born in New Zealand, Martin, also the youngest left in the field, just missed out on a debut podium finish. He ended the competition in fourth place, just outside the medal bracket. Japan’s Kira Kimura claimed the gold, with fellow countrymate Ryoma Kimata taking silver. Bronze went to China’s Yiming Su, who won the event on home turf in Beijing 2022. Martin suffered the arm break 10 days ago in a fall during X Games practice. He underwent surgery, but kept quiet about his injury until now. “I mean any result is great, fourth is great, third would have been better, but I’m just happy I am out of the contest safe,” Martin said after the competition. “I’m pretty proud of myself. Just to be able to come this far is pretty cool.” It might not have been the historic podium finish Martin was hoping for, but he’s made a name for himself for future Winter Games to come.
