Figure skater asks professor for extension on assignment: ‘I was competing in the Olympics'
Feb 07, 2026
Olympians, they’re just like us.
Madeline Schizas is a 22-year-old senior at McMaster University in Ontario, Canada, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Environment Society degree. She also happens to be an Olympic figure skater for Team Canada competing at 2026 Milan Cortina Games.
Between train
ing and competition, Schizas was a bit preoccupied and mixed up her assignment due date for sociology class. She thought her work was due on Sunday, but it was actually due on Friday.

However, on Friday, Schizas was busy competing in the women’s short program for the team event.
On Saturday morning, Schizas shared a screenshot on her Instagram Story of the email she was sending her professor, asking for an extension on the assignment.
“Hi Prof. I am a student in your Sociology 2FF3 course and am wondering if I could get a short extension on this week’s reflection. I was competing in the Olympic Games yesterday and thought the reflection was due on Sunday, not Friday,” she wrote.
She added a link to the Canadian Olympic Committee press release “to confirm my participation.”
Schizas made her Olympic debut at the 2022 Beijing Olympics and is Canada’s sole entry in the women’s individual figure skating event taking place on Feb. 17, just three days after her Valentine’s Day birthday.
Team Canada got a solid showing in the first day of the figure skating team event. After the rhythm dance, the pairs short program, and the women’s short program, the Canadians are in fifth place with 19 points. The U.S. currently leads with 25 points, thanks to stellar performances by Madison Chock and Evan Bates, and Alysa Liu.
