Geauga Park District Naturalist Trevor Wearstler is inviting the public to experience art a little differently during his Bird ID Through Art program on Feb. 15. Registration is recommended to receive updates and reminders but not required to attend from 2 to 3 p.m. at The West Woods Nature Center, 9465 Kinsman Road in Russell Township. Bird identification can feel intimidating, but this program may show attendees that they have already got a strong eye and aptitude for this hobby, according to a news release. “We’ll discuss bird ID and how various artists use field marks,” Wearstler stated in the release. “That’s how we can ID a cardinal even if a kindergartener draws one.” In The West Woods’ relaxing environment, come explore a variety of bird-themed artwork and learn how artists capture those key field marks, like shape, color patterns and posture — details that are just as important on the canvas as they are in the field. Naturalist Trevor will then share tips for sharpening your own observation skills to prepare you for your next foray into bird ID at home or in the park. Attendance at Bird ID Through Art is also a precursor to Geauga Park District’s upcoming “On the Wing…Nature That Takes Flight” Community Art Show, which will accept online artist applications Feb. 12 through March 12 and go on exhibition at The West Woods Nature Center from March 28 through July 26.
