Mother thinks woman found dead outside Philly church was trying to escape danger
Feb 06, 2026
A family is in mourning after a woman was found dead on the steps of a church in Southwest Philadelphia one week ago.
The mother of Angela Serrano, 35, told NBC10 that she believes her daughter went to St. Irenaeus Church on the 7200 block of Grovers Avenue on Feb. 1, 2026, because she was in da
nger.
“She was my first daughter,” Maria Dofilis said.
Now, Dofilis is living through the grief of losing her daughter while searching for answers.
On Friday, Jan. 30, Dofilis said that she called her daughter to make sure she was safe and staying inside as temperatures were plummeting ahead of the looming snow storm.
“She was telling me, ‘yes mommy. I’m here, I’m fine, I’m working,'” Dofilis explained.
That would be the last time they would speak.
The Philadelphia Police Department said that on Sunday, Feb. 1, a woman’s body was found under freezing temperatures on the steps of the Southwest Philadelphia church.
Dofilis said it was two days later that she received confirmation of her daughter’s death through a phone call.
“I couldn’t take the news,” she said.
Dofilis told NBC10 that she think her daughter was in some kind of danger.
“I don’t have her car, her cell phone, her debit card. I don’t know where they are. I need to find out where my daughter’s car is,” she said.
An investigation into Serrano’s death is ongoing.
