Teachers strike: SF schools may not open if educators walk out on Monday
Feb 06, 2026
San Francisco Unified School District leaders said all campuses will be unable to open Monday if teachers go ahead with a planned strike.
The announcement comes as the district and teachers union are scheduled to continue negotiations for a new contract over the weekend.
“I want families to
know how deeply we value our educators and committed I am to avoiding a strike,” Superintendent Maria Su said during a news briefing on Friday. “While I am very disappointed these negotiations did not result in an agreement last night, my team and I are prerpared to bargain the entire weekend. I do not want a strike.”
Su said schools will be forced to shut down when teachers hit the picket lines. A work stoppage would be the first strike for San Francisco educators in decades.

The superintendent said she believes a proposal presented Thursday night was a win-win, but the union sees it differently.
The union is calling for fully funded healthcare, an increase in wages and more stable staffing.
Su on Friday said the district continues to try to find a resolution, but is also making plans to respond if the strike moves forward. The district said that includes plans to make grade level instructional packets available to students. Officials are also having conversations with city partners on safety nets for underserved students who rely on school as a stable place to spend their days.
The union on Thursday said it is still waiting for what they call a serious proposal, with representatives saying they’re disappointed by a lack of urgency by the district.
“The proposal that we received tonight did not reflect what we understood to have been that intent, it falls very short of that issue and doesn’t address some of our other key issues as well, UESF President Cassondra Curiel said on Thursday.
Both the district and union are expected to resume negotiations on Saturday.
