The Stanley County Buffaloes went looking for their 14th win on the season in Chamberlain Thursday night, and knew the Cubs were playing some of their best basketball of the season coming into the contest. Chamberlain had won their last two games against two opponents above .500, and were hoping to make it three-straight against the visiting Buffaloes. Stanley County jumped in headfirst taking an 18-2 first quarter lead thanks to a nearly perfect first four minutes of shooting. Paxton Deal started the game with a corner three mere seconds after tip, and Eddie Duffy started 3-for-3 from outside the arc. Even in the face of adversity, the Cubs showed their grit by slowly chipping away at the double-digit deficit. Both teams were trading buckets as both offenses and defenses settled in. In the second half, Chamberlain’s Miles Thompson found his rhythm as he started to knock down shots from all over the floor. The Cubs battled all the way back in the second half to make it a two-possession game. Leading by six, the Buffaloes leaned on junior Eddie Duffy, who was white-hot from the floor. Duffy made four threes, but maybe his best work came from the free throw line in the fourth quarter. Duffy continued to target the Cubs defense earning him trips to the line that he would convert helping pad the lead. Duffy also hit a couple crucial field goals in the fourth quarter to help the Buffaloes secure the 69-57. Duffy finished with 33 points leading both teams in scoring and earning Player of the Game honors, Chamberlain’s Thompson finished with 17. The Cubs fall to 7-7 with the loss and will look to get back above .500 on the road against Mt. Vernon-Plankinton tonight. Stanley County improved to 14-2 and will face Gettysburg at home 2/14 for a game that was postponed from late last month. ...read more read less
