It’s unclear how all of this is going to end up, but apparently there was a mistake in the team scoring at last week’s Colonial Valley Conference Championships Wrestling Tournament,. When the tournament ended on the last Saturday of January, the Steinert boys were declared the winner after they finished one point ahead of Robbinsville. It has since come to light, however, that Robbinsville should have been given two more points in the team scoring. All results in a tournament are entered into a website called “Track Wrestling,” which automatically tabulates the team scoring. The Track Wrestling website now shows Robbinsville with 236 points and Steinert with 235. The mistake came when a bout involving a Robbinsville wrestler was entered into Track Wrestling as a “no contest.” In reality, it should have been entered as a forfeit win and the Robbinsville wrestler should have been given two advancement points. In fact, the Raven wrestler may very well have been given even more points than two because he pinned in his next bout. The way the rule reads is any bonus points awarded for a forfeit win is based on what the wrestler does in his next bout. The irony, of course, is the tournament was held at Robbinsville. As a result, it was a mistake made by the home team’s tournament officials that initially resulted in the host Ravens finishing second when, in fact, they actually had the most points and should have been declared the champion. When the mistake was discovered on Thursday, the matter was turned over the NJSIAA to make a ruling. According to reports, the NJSIAA said even if a mistake was made nothing can be done because the score had to be corrected within 30 minutes of the end of the tournament. The problem with the NJSIAA decision is it has previously set a precedent of ruling just the opposite. One year North Hunterdon was declared the team champion of the District 17 Tournament three days after the tournament ended. Hunterdon Central originally was named the winner of the district, but when a mistake was discovered the scoring was corrected and North Hunterdon was awarded the championship trophy on the first night of regions.
