(KRON) -- Authorities in Monterey County are investigating after two human skulls, a body and other remains have recently been located in the region, the sheriff’s office said Wednesday.
People walking in a rural area near Cachagua Road in Carmel Valley on Jan. 29 at 6:45 p.m. came across what th
ey believed was a human skull and other remains, according to authorities. Deputies who responded confirmed the report.
The discovery comes one month after a human skull and additional remains were found by a land surveyor near Viejo Road in an unincorporated area near Monterey. The remains in that case are still pending identification through DNA analysis, the sheriff’s office said Wednesday.

The scene at Cachagua Road was processed by the Monterey County Sheriff's Office Coroner Division over the course of several days, and additional human remains were collected, according to authorities.
“A forensic examination will be conducted to assist in identifying the remains,” the sheriff’s office said Wednesday. “This process will include DNA analysis and comparison with missing and unidentified persons records through the California Department of Justice.”
In a separate case, a human body was located Wednesday morning in an unincorporated area of Salinas. The body, which was identified as male, was found in an agricultural field “several hundred yards” north of Highway 183 at McFadden Road, the sheriff’s office said.
The Coroner Unit is working to identify the male and determine the cause of death.
Authorities have not announced any connection between the cases.
