The public is invited to meet up for Geauga Park District’s second annual “Wild About Winter Nights” – an all-ages community event showcasing all the fun a winter night can provide, featuring a bonfire on a very cold winter night. The event will take place Feb. 7 at Big Creek Park, 9160 Robi nson Road in Chardon Township. Attendees will want to bundle up for the weather with appropriate footwear and arrive at 6 p.m. to enjoy everything offered before 9 p.m., according to a news release. Activities include a bonfire in the field near Maple Grove Shelter, naturalist-led night hikes at 7 and 8 p.m., a self-guided luminary-lit trail, a nature touch table and display featuring nocturnal animals, guided astronomy with park telescopes if skies are clear, snowshoeing and various outdoor snow games including snow snakes and winter cornhole. Attendees can also go to the shelter area, too, for free hot cocoa, s’mores and a nature-based playground to explore in winter night conditions. “Wild About Winter Nights” is free to enjoy and entirely outdoors; no registration is required. If the parking lot is full at Maple Grove Shelter, attendees can park just down the way near the Donald W. Meyer Center or Deep Woods Lodge and catch a school-bus shuttle over to the event. People also can opt to park in the Meyer Center lot and let their eyes adjust to the dark as they take the Trillium Trail through the woods, the release stated. ...read more read less
