LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) — Laurel County Sheriff John Root is confirming that the Federal Bureau of Investigation is actively investigating the London Police Department. In a statement shared with ABC36, Root said his office has been directed by the Kentucky State Police Audit staff in F rankfort to take over management responsibilities connected to the National Crime Information Center, also known as NCIC. Previously, those responsibilities were shared by both the London Police Department and the sheriff’s office. Root said that change was approved Tuesday during a specially called 911 meeting and passed unanimously. While confirming the investigation itself, Root emphasized that the Laurel County Sheriff’s Office is not directly involved in the FBI’s probe and does not have details about what is being examined. He said his agency’s role is focused strictly on the NCIC management side, following guidance from state officials. No additional information about the scope or timeline of the federal investigation has been released. ABC36 News Now will continue working to learn more as details become available.
