McDonalds OK’d to open 24hour drive through in Tinley Park, despite residents’ pushback
Feb 04, 2026
The Tinley Park Village Board voted 5-1 on Tuesday to approve a development along 191st Street, including allowing a planned McDonald’s to be open 24 hours with an overnight drive through.
Only Trustee Colleen M. Sullivan voted against the proposal.
Residents have pushed back on the development be
cause of the restaurant’s proximity to their neighborhood.
The residents said headlights, the noise of cars and the smell of the establishment would cause a disturbance.
The Plan Commission approved the plan with an amendment to limit the McDonald’s operation to between 5 a.m. and 11 p.m.
But Dan Olsen, president of Upstream Design Group, the civil engineering firm behind the McDonald’s development, opposed the hour restrictions at the Jan. 20 Village Board meeting.
“Obviously our desire is to have the restrictions lifted and to allow the demands of the business to speak to the hours that are set for the business,” he said.
Mayor Michael Glotz said Jan. 20 the proposal was only being moved past first reading, instead of being fully approved, in order to give residents multiple chances to comment before Tuesday’s vote.
Residents also expressed concern Tuesday that a 24-hour operation could lead to more crime in their neighborhoods, including home invasions/robberies and cars speeding in their subdivision.
During the summer, when village concerts occur, residents said concert-goers could potentially congregate in the neighborhood if the 24-hour drive-through is approved.
A proposal was made to put a trial period on the establishment to monitor crime between May and October, when the concerts typically run, but no trustee seconded the motion.
Jason Bird, a resident of 22 years, was among the residents opposed to the 24-hour drive-through, and said he was disappointed after the vote.
“No one wanted to work together on this and didn’t want to please the residents, which is disappointing,” Bird said. “The traffic is a nuisance.”
He said he hopes the police will work with the residents once the McDonald’s is open.
