Good morning. Partly sunny with a high around 34 today. A low near 18 overnight. The National Museum of African American History Culture will be closed today due to “complications involving the recent winter storm.” You can find me on Bluesky, I’m @abeaujon.87 on Signal, and there’s a link

I can’t stop listening to:
Summer Salt, “Fire Flower.” These mellow Texans play the Atlantis tonight with Boyscott and Wabie.
Take Washingtonian Today with you! I made a playlist on Spotify and on Apple Music of last year’s music recommendations. I’ll make one soon for 2026.
Here’s some administration news you might have blocked out:
Unquiet quitting: “This job sucks,” a lawyer for the US Attorney’s office in Minnesota told a federal judge yesterday. Julie Le had 88 cases assigned and said it was like “pulling teeth” to get her clients, including DHS and ICE, to follow court orders. (NBC News) The US Department of Justice ordered US Attorney’s offices nationwide to designate prosecutors for “emergency” teams that can help prosecute cases nationwide. (Bloomberg Law)
The ICE storm: A federal judge in Portland, Oregon, said top DHS officials “celebrate violent responses over fair and diplomatic ones” and issued a temporary order that prohibits federal immigration officials from deploying tear gas or weapons against protesters. (Politico) The government used an “administrative subpoena” against a retiree in Pennsylvania who urged a prosecutor not to deport an Afghan citizen. Those subpoenas are little-known, even as the government frequently deploys them. (Washington Post) ICE demanded a Maine sheriff’s office’s employment records after he criticized immigration enforcement efforts. (Bangor Daily News) A ten-year-old and her mother will return to Minnesota after federal immigration agents snatched them and detained them in Texas. (Sahan Journal) Two paramilitary units are at the forefront of federal immigration efforts nationwide. (Wired) Meanwhile: Congress ended a partial government shutdown yesterday, setting up a fight over reforms to DHS that must be resolved by the end of next week. (Politico)
Administration perambulation: President Trump repeated his calls for Republicans to take over elections in states that presumably didn’t vote for him. (WSJ) A federal judge in DC “appeared to be skeptical of key arguments that a government attorney made” about the Pentagon’s campaign against US Senator Mark Kelly. (AP) A whistleblower complaint against Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard finally made it to Congress after eight months of delays. (CBS News) Trump posted a rendering of the massive ballroom he tore down the East Wing to build. (NYT)
