Fire rips through Mel’s DriveIn in San Francisco

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) -- Firefighters in San Francisco responded Tuesday morning to a kitchen fire at Mel’s Drive-In on Lombard Street.
The San Francisco Fire Department was dispatched after a cleaning crew out in the parking lot reported the blaze at 4:14 a.m. Arriving firefighters found flames i
n the kitchen’s flue area, also known as a grease trap fire.
Fire crews cut a hole in the roof of the building amid fire suppression efforts.

Gabriel Mendez, co-owner of Mel's Drive-In, told KRON4 that the damage is "pretty severe." He estimated that the location would be shut down for three to four months as repairs are made.
The restaurant was closed at the time of the fire, SFFD said. No injuries have been reported.

Motorists were advised to seek alternate routes due to traffic impacts in the area.
Mel's Drive-In, which serves classic American food, has three other diner locations in San Francisco on Mission Street, Geary Boulevard and Van Ness Avenue. The Lombard location is set to turn 40 years old this July.
