TAMPA – There’s no way a roof could ever contain everything that happened on Sunday night. In a game that featured just about everything, the Tampa Bay Lightning scored four unanswered goals and then went on to defeat the Boston Bruins, 6-5, in front of 64,617 fans at Raymond James Stadium in an outdoor Stadium Series contest. Brandon Hagel setting an NHL outdoor game record by scoring just 11 seconds in was just the tip of the iceberg on an unseasonably cold night that saw a goalie fight between Andrei Vasilevskiy and Jeremy Swayman, a four-goal second period lead by the visitors that ultimately wasn’t enough, and an atmosphere and overall night that rivals anything the league has seen in the course of 45 total outdoor games over the last two-plus decades. The big, viral takeaway, however, will be the second period bout at center ice between two of the league’s top goaltenders, an entertaining and extremely rare all-goalie fight that ended in appreciation between both men for what they’d just done in front of an electrified, sellout crowd that was baring 42 degree temperatures at puck drop. “When we both fell, we said to each other a few nice words, it was super nice,” Vasilevskiy said afterwards of what was just the ninth goalie-versus-goalie scrap since the 2005 lockout. “It was one of the biggest moments for me personally, I’d never fought in the NHL, so thanks to him for that.” Thanks as well, perhaps, for the momentum it seemed to bring the Lightning. Down 5-2 at that point, they continued to rally back to score two more times in the second stanza and then once more in the third on a Nikita Kucherov tally to send the game to overtime and then a shootout.  The consenus afterwards from Tampa Bay’s temporary home in the Buccaneers home locker room was that was the moment where things began to shift. “It was huge,” said defenseman Ryan McDonagh. “We were kind of stunned in the first there, playing slow and a lot of mistakes. Vasy just elevated us for sure, rallied us and helped us get that energy back and that passion back in the third. I’ve never seen him do that before, but I know he’s a fierce competitor and he took exception when (Brandon Hagel) was getting punches thrown at him by their goalie. I think the whole league now knows that he’s a lefty.” Head coach Jon Cooper, whose team still only has one regulation loss since December 18, echoed similar sentiments on the significance of it. “I was like, ‘Thank goodness, something positive is going to happen to our game,’” he said.  “I give Boston a lot of credit, they took it to us and we weren’t prepared for it. I think probably the score had something to do with (the fight) too, Vasy was pissed.” It was Jake Guentzel who ultimately completed the comeback from the largest deficit in NHL outdoor game history with the game-winner in the shootout, and even shortly removed from the moment, he was able to put in perspective what the entirety of the night meant. “I don’t think you can get much better than this outdoor game in NHL history,” he said. “I think there was a little bit of everything; down 5-1 to come back and get to overtime, there was the goalie fight, there was drama and just what it meant to Tampa Bay that we had an outdoor game. That was one night that you’ll remember for the rest of your life.” ...read more read less
