Gaston County officials warn residents of payment scam
Feb 02, 2026
GASTON COUNTY, N.C. (News Release) — County officials are warning residents and property owners about a new scam involving fraudulent invoices requesting payment for zoning permits and services. An example of the fraudulent invoice is available above.
The scam involves invoices that appear to be
official county correspondence and may include the county’s name, logo or letterhead. These invoices state that payment is required to process or approve a zoning request and direct recipients to submit payment through wire transfer. These invoices are not from Gaston County and are fraudulent.
County officials are aware that similar scams have been reported in other counties and cities, suggesting this is a new and expanding scheme targeting property owners and businesses.
Residents who receive an invoice requesting payment for zoning services, should not send payment or provide personal or financial information. Individuals who are unsure whether a rezoning related communication is legitimate are encouraged to call county
offices at 704-866-3155, or email the planning and zoning department directly at [email protected].
County officials urge residents to remain vigilant and to share this information with neighbors, businesses and community members. Residents should rely only on Gaston County’s official website and verified communication channels for accurate information
and official notices.
