A person died and another one is in critical condition following a crash in San Leandro, authorities said Sunday. San Leandro police said a sergeant attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a white Infinity SUV on Saturday at 11:17 p.m. for multiple vehicle code violations near East 14th Street and Bancroft Avenue. CHP said the pursuit was initiated by San Leandro police, although San Leandro police reports the sergeant did not pursue the vehicle. Police said the vehicle was “being monitored from above” by an Alameda County Sheriff’s Office air unit. CHP said the suspect vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed on Bancroft Avenue and tried to turn into 139th Avenue when it lost control and crashed into the front of a home and a parked vehicle. CHP said the passenger of the vehicle died as a result and the driver is in critical condition.
