INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A firefighter with the Indianapolis Fire Department was slightly injured during an apartment fire on the city’s east side Saturday. At 6:05 p.m. Saturday, IFD firefighters responded to the 2800 block of Priscilla Avenue on a report of an apartment fire. Firefighters arrived and located a heavy fire inside an apartment that forced out three adults, four children, and a dog. An occupant told firefighters that she had a candle burning in the living room and her husband was alerted to a heavy amount of smoke developing. Investigators found combustibles around the lit candle, which quickly grew. A man evacuated through the front door of the apartment with the dog and a woman ran upstairs to grab the four children (ages 1, 5, 8, and 10). The woman, her sister, and the children ran downstairs and safely exited through a rear door. All of the occupants were checked at the scene and are okay. After arriving to the scene, firefighters found heavy smoke showing from both floors of the two-story building and made an aggressive attack. Crews were able to mark the fire under control in 35 minutes. A firefighter was slightly injured when a large piece of ceiling drywall fell and hit him on the head. He was transported to Methodist Hospital. IFD Fire Investigations is investigating the incident. IFD Victims Assistance is working with Red Cross to help the occupants with shelter. ...read more read less
