SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) -- Rob. Van. Dam. "'Van-tastic' as I like to say. If you're not RVD, you can only imagine." World Wrestling Entertainment Hall of Famer, multi-time champion, and Extreme Championship Wrestling "Original" Rob Van Dam (RVD) was in the Bay Area on Saturday, Jan. 31, to drop the c elebrity puck for "CudaMania" at SAP Center in San Jose, as the San Jose Barracuda took on the Calgary Wranglers."The Whole F'N Show" stopped by The Finish with Kor Tor to talk about a wide range of topics. Here are several key takeaways — in Mr. Monday Night's own words. Watch the full interview in the video player above. Rob Van Dam (Photo: KRON4 News) Alleged mastermind behind WWE's 'ECW One Night Stand' When asked if he would've ever predicted the lasting longevity of the 2006 premium live event where he famously cashed in his Money in the Bank briefcase to beat John Cena for the WWE Championship, Van Dam said, "No, you know, that's not the perspective that I had at all. But I knew that everything we were doing was historical because, you know, it was my idea to bring ECW back." "I went to Vince and said, 'Dude, we should have a pay-per-view. You know, just ECW. Just do it one night only.' And hen that spawned the brand, and I knew moving forward, like, 'Wow, we're going. This is a third brand. Like, we're adding to Raw and Smackdown, a whole new show.' And it was my idea. I felt very much like I was helping make history. And I knew moving forward that things were going to be different because the entire playing field had changed. And if it wasn't for that, I don't know if I would have ever been the top guy even, you know, for that moment. But I was the right foot to put forward for ECW. And just like most of us ECW wrestlers and fans, our heart never left it." Marijuana in Sports Van Dam was stripped of the WWE Championship he won from Cena and let go in 2006 after being pulled over for speeding and getting caught with marijuana. He gave his take on how WWE now approaches the use of marijuana with their talent, following a recent episode of Cody Rhodes' podcast where guest and fellow WWE superstar Finn Balor mentioned he smokes weed while training. RVD was featured in the March 1999 High Times magazine. "I have been an advocate since '97, '98, somewhere around there. And it was actually actively involved. I used to go to UCLA, and I spoke to the kids, and I would go to events because I knew someday it would change, you know, and it's still tragic. There's still obviously stigma on it and we're moving away from that. It's part of being ahead of your time, you know what I mean? I knew that eventually common sense would win. So back then it was just swimming upstream. I just felt eventually everyone would come around." "Quite a while ago they stopped testing for it in WWE, so I knew it was heading this way. I don't know if it was made an example of or what. But even though I got busted with it, they would like to work it in and the interviews and promos, you know, and with a wink-wink — 'No one gets higher.'" Being a Paul Heyman Guy "If there wasn't a Paul, I guess there wouldn't be a 'Whole F'N Show,' probably, if you want to put it that way, because that was the outlet, you know, and I loved ECW. I learned to stay in that environment and kind of master, so to speak, that highly opinionated crowd based on the pressure that I put on myself and they put on me. I didn't want to slip and had everybody chant, 'You effed up. You effed up.' You know what I mean? And that was. That was punishment, you know, just on my own psyche. I would strive to always do the best, even when taking higher risks, you know, I would have to pull them off. Otherwise, wasn't worth it. And so I'm glad that I stayed there during those formative years because I did have options to go to other companies, and I had wrestled for other companies, and ECW was just my favorite. And that was because of Paul. He was great at bringing people's strengths out." ...read more read less
