City road crews and contractors will continue to work through the weekend to treat roads, open turn lanes and major intersections, clear school bus routes, and remove ice piles on major roads. Crews will break up the ice at night using heavy equipment, such as front-end loaders and skid steers. “ The heavier equipment is effective on the ice, but progress is slow,” said Nancy Albright, Commissioner of Environmental Quality and Public Works. The storm last weekend brought less snow than was forecast, but more freezing rain and rain that turned to ice, and packed the snow into ice. Bitter cold temperatures have kept the ice from melting, despite repeated applications of salt. “Even though we have spread about 3,600 tons of salt and 12,000 gallons of Beet Heet (a deicer), we still have ice,” Albright said. A normal storm uses about 1,000-1,500 tons of salt. Albright said 10 miles made a difference in the type of weather we received. “One or two counties away from Fayette, in any direction, was a very different weather experience,” she said.
