(File photo by Terry Pierson, The Press-Enterprise/SCNG) Longtime Moreno Valley school board member Cleveland Johnson has retired, and his former colleagues will appoint someone to take his seat. The board voted unanimously Tuesday, Jan. 27, to make an appointment Tuesday, Feb. 25, to fill the Trustee Area 3 vacancy. Johnson joined the board in 2010 and was set to finish his term in December 2026. He gave his retirement notice Jan. 23, and it took effect Monday, Jan. 26. Johnson could not immediately be reached for comment Friday, Jan. 30. The Moreno Valley Unified School District board set a date for interviews later in the month before the planned Feb. 25 appointment date. During the meeting, board members learned that the district would miss the June election cycle because, under the law, they must give candidates a 130-day window to campaign. If trustees had waited until the November election, the seat would have been open for 10 months. The appointed board member will represent Trustee Area 3, which encompasses the area east of the 215 Freeway and south of Alessandro Boulevard.
