Student builds igloo on Notre Dame campus INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — This January, not everyone is fighting the winter blues. In South Bend, Indiana, a University of Notre Dame student is creating a work of art on campus, and it’s bringing the campus together. At Notre Dame, a bit of magic is creating quite the buzz on campus. “Every time I go outside, there’s a group of people hanging out in my igloo checking it out,” said Liam Devine, a sophomore. Devine is behind the large, multi-room igloo. “I’ve spent around 90 hours on it now,” Devine said. “The longest I was out there 13 hours straight. I only stopped for dinner.” Born in Belgium, Devine is a Florida native and was not used to this much snow. “The inspiration came from my dad because when I used to be young when I was like five years old, Devine said. “He used to make big snow forts in our backyard for me because we used to get snow in Belgium.” His igloo, made of recycling bins packed with snow, has turned into a hangout. “I get my Xbox and my TV out there, and we just all hang out and play some video games,” Devine said. People can’t help but stop. “The response has honestly been my favorite part of this entire experience,” Devine said. “It started out with just an igloo I was building for fun, got my roommates out there on a Friday night, and was like, ‘Hey, let’s just build a small snow fort.'” Devine is a biology major. He is still perfecting his masterpiece. “Whenever they (students) come up and they ask like, ‘Are you an engineer? Are you an architect?’ It’s like, ‘Nope, I’m a biology major from Florida. Just been figuring it out as I go,'” Devine said. While the snow will eventually melt, the friendships he’s made are here to stay. “I’ve taken hundreds of people’s pictures,” Devine said. “There’s a lot of guys in my dorm that I haven’t really interacted with all that much and didn’t know all that much before this, and they started coming out there to help me some nights, and I’ve gotten to know them really well.” Devine’s buddies are also working on an igloo chapel with plans of holding Mass inside. ...read more read less
