AAA warns drivers of common mistakes on icy and snowcovered roads

LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) – Many drivers believe they are prepared for winter weather, but experts say it is easy to make mistakes that can quickly lead to accidents on icy and snow-covered roads.
AAA officials say proper preparation and cautious driving are key to staying safe as winter
conditions worsen across the region.
“Road conditions are some of the worst that I think we’ve seen in our area in a very long time,” said Lori Weaver Hawkins with AAA. “This is not a time to think that you can just go out.”
Weaver Hawkins says drivers often underestimate how dangerous icy roads can be, even in four-wheel-drive vehicles.
“It’s so easy to lose control of your vehicle,” she said. “You might think the roadways look fine, and then immediately up the road there’s another area where there’s ice and snow.”
AAA says speeding is one of the most common and dangerous mistakes drivers make during winter storms.
“When we have bad road conditions with ice and snow, the posted speed limit may not be the safe speed limit any longer,” Weaver Hawkins said. “Go ahead and reduce that speed so you can better maneuver your vehicle.”
Experts also stress the importance of being snow-ready before leaving home.
“Number one, make sure you have your vehicle emergency kit in your car,” Weaver Hawkins said. “In the wintertime, add things like sand or kitty litter for traction, a snow shovel, flashlight, batteries, de-icer, an ice scraper with a brush, jumper cables and extra warm clothing.”
AAA also recommends checking tire pressure and keeping the gas tank at least half full to help prevent fuel lines from freezing.
If a driver begins to skid, Weaver Hawkins says staying calm is critical.
“Continue to look and steer your vehicle in the direction you want it to go rather than applying the brake,” she said.
Another common mistake AAA warns against is tailgating on icy roads.
“Leave yourself extra room between you and the vehicle ahead of you, at least three times what you normally would,” Weaver Hawkins said. “No tailgating. That can be extremely dangerous in winter conditions.”
AAA also reminds drivers to completely clear snow and ice from their vehicle, including the hood and roof, before driving. Snow or ice that flies off can create hazards for other motorists and may lead to fines if it causes an accident.
Officials urge drivers to take extra time to prepare and avoid unnecessary travel when conditions are dangerous.
