Pedestrian bridge to be removed from ‘heart of Chinatown’ amid SF park renovation

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) -- City leaders in San Francisco announced Thursday that a park renovation in Chinatown is one step closer to beginning construction this summer. The Portsmouth Square project will create a new outdoor event space along with a community clubhouse, update the playground and impro
ve the seating and landscaping. At the same time, it will also remove the pedestrian bridge that crosses above Kearny Street.
The San Francisco Recreation and Park Department said a contractor, Swinerton Builders, has been recommended for the project following a bidding process. Swinerton Builders bid just under $48 million for the Portsmouth Square project, officials said. A vote for final approval is expected to take place Feb. 19.
“Portsmouth Square has always been the heart of Chinatown and a place for seniors to gather, families to connect, and culture to thrive,” said SF Supervisor Danny Sauter. “This project is a major step forward in delivering a long-overdue renovation shaped by years of community input.”
According to the parks department, removing the pedestrian bridge will reopen sightlines and restore the “historic character of the square.”
Funding for the park renovation, according to officials, will come from the 2020 Health and Recovery Bond, developer impact fees, the Downtown Park Fund, state budget allocations and grants.
Construction for the revamped Portsmouth Square is estimated to last just over two years, aiming to reopen in fall 2028. The underground garage, which will see upgrades to the drainage and waterproofing, is expected to remain open during construction.
Mayor Daniel Lurie said, “These improvements will help keep the park a welcoming public space that brings people together and ensure that Chinatown continues to thrive for generations to come.”
