A man has been arrested after police said he assaulted his grandmother inside a Delaware hotel room, leaving her with life-threatening injuries. According to Delaware State Police, on Thursday, January 29, 2026, around 5:45 p.m., troopers responded to the Hyatt House, located at 17254 Five Point s Square in Lewes, after a guest told hotel staff that he had “killed his grandmother in one of the hotel rooms.”  When troopers arrived, police said they spoke to the suspect, identified as Dempsey Fritchey, 30, of Lewes, Delaware, who was near the lobby. Police said Fritchey told the troopers at the time that he may have killed his grandmother, and troopers immediately detained him. When troopers went to the hotel room, police said they found a 72-year-old woman unconscious and suffering from injuries to her face and head. She was given aid until EMS arrived and took her to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries. An investigation revealed that while staying together in the hotel, Fritchey, for unknown reasons, suddenly assaulted his grandmother with his hands and feet, and afterwards went to the lobby and told hotel staff about the incident, according to police. Police said Fritchey was arrested and charged with first-degree assault and committed to Sussex Correctional Institution on a $300,000 cash bond. Detectives are asking anyone who has any information about the incident to contact Detective D. Hickman at (302) 752-3856.  If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic violence, contact the National Domestic Violence Hotline by calling 1-800-799-SAFE (7233), visiting www.thehotline.org or texting LOVEIS to 22522. ...read more read less
