WASHINGTON (WISH) — President Donald Trump has signed an executive order to “celebrate American greatness” with a special 500-style IndyCar race in Washington, D.C., this summer. The street race, dubbed “Freedom 250 Grand Prix,” will be held near the National Mall in honor of the c ountry’s 250th birthday, is free, and will be open to the public. It will be the first motor race held in the capital. Trump signed the order in the Oval Office Friday morning, according to the White House. Roger Penske, owner of Team Penske, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, and IndyCar, was present at the signing. The full order, according to a White House fact sheet, called for the following: The Department of the Interior and Department of Transportation to “designate a suitable race route that showcases the majesty of Washington, D.C., and its iconic national monuments.” The Secretary of the Interior and Secretary of Transportation to gather and issue necessary permits, approvals, and authorizations “as expeditiously as possible” so planning can start. The Administration to coordinate with the city’s mayor to make sure “any roads, trails, or bridges are properly maintained and capable of being used as part of the race course.” Trump also approved funds for the Secretary of Transportation, the funds dedicated to facilitating the race and coordinating with the FAA to allow drones and aerial photography to “enhance public enjoyment without compromising nearby government facilities.” Trump, in the presser from the Oval Office, called IndyCar a “source of pride and entertainment for the nation,” one that is awe-inspiring. “For over one hundred years, American INDYCAR racing has set the pace for motorsports,” Trump said. “With speeds topping over 200 miles per hour, the cars and drivers inspire awe and respect in all who watch this quintessentially American sport.” Penske added, “President Trump has bestowed an incredible distinction upon our sport, and we’re grateful for his trust and support as INDYCAR prepares to honor our country with a tremendous racing spectacle. This will be a truly memorable event that celebrates our country’s independence and the legacy of patriotism, innovation, and excellence that powers motorsports across America.” “Freedom doesn’t ring, it revs!” Sean Duffy, Secretary of Transportation, said. A date for the “Freedom 250” has not been set yet. This story has been updated with more information from Team Penske. ...read more read less
