A series of recent meetings between Alberta separatist activists and officials tied to former U.S. president Donald Trump has triggered a sharp reaction across Canada, raising concerns about foreign involvement in domestic political debates.
The discussions involved members of the Alberta Prosperity
Project, a group advocating for the western province to consider independence. The talks, first disclosed publicly this week, reportedly included broad conversations about economic support and future political scenarios if Alberta were to separate from Canada.
Canada’s federal government moved quickly to respond. Prime Minister Mark Carney said the United States is expected to respect Canadian sovereignty and avoid actions that could undermine national unity. Several provincial leaders echoed that message, warning that engaging foreign governments on secession crosses a serious line.
Alberta Premier Danielle Smith has distanced her government from the separatist group, saying she does not support independence but acknowledges ongoing economic frustration among some residents.
