Immigrant rights groups prepare for ICE activity at Super Bowl LX

With fears growing ahead of Super Bowl LX in Santa Clara as word travels that Immigration and Customs Enforcement is coming to the Bay Area, immigration activists plan to counter federal agents.
ICE agents are supposed to arrive in the South Bay in the days leading up to the big game, sources tol
d NBC Bay Area. What is unclear is how many agents are coming.
South Bay congressional representatives Zoe Lofgren and Sam Liccardo took an offensive approach Thursday, gathering up local leaders and immigrant community groups to warn ICE and the Trump administration not to try what it did in Minnesota in the South Bay.
“Never again. Never again can we see this type of cruelty, this kind of chaos, unleashed on communities throughout our country. We won’t stand for it here and we can’t stand for it anywhere in the United States of America,” Liccardo said.
“The President and Secretary Noem have basically been telling these agents that ‘They can do anything and nothing will ever happen to them’. That’s not true, and so I do think it’s important that word get out to these agents that if they commit violence and crimes in our community, they’ll be arrested and prosecuted,” Lofgren said.
San Jose mayor Matt Mahan and Santa Clara County sheriff Bob Jonsen publicly reminded ICE all law enforcement officers must be unmasked and cannot stage ICE operations on city or county property.
“But if they’re not masked, if they’re wearing tan and green, or blue or black, trust me they’re there for your protection,” Jonsen said.
SIREN and other immigrant assistance groups say their hotlines are jammed.
“There have been days when we have fielded up to 120 calls a day. The sheer volume of calls has long informed us that fear is rampant,” said Huy Tran, SIREN executive director.
SIREN belongs to the Rapid Response network which has its own virtual news conference to say ICE is a constant concern not just for a big event.
“While we don’t know ‘how many’ agents, ‘when’ they’re coming, what enforcement they’ll be doing, what we do know is that we are ready to stand with our community,” said Socorro Montano with the Rapid Response Network.
It is a difficult thing to prepare for, the sheriff pointed out. Unlike the usual courtesy among law-enforcement agencies, ICE has not said one word to them about their plans or schedules. So, as the sheriff said, they are preparing for the known and the unknown.
