Everyman Theatre has found its next artistic director in Brandon Weinbrenner, a director, producer, and current associate artistic director at the Alley Theatre in Houston. Weinbrenner lives with his husband, theatre director Mitchell Greco, and their dog, Clyde. He will move to Baltimore an d begin in his new role starting in July 2026. “We are fortunate to have found an exciting and vibrant artistic director who shares our cultural and artistic values and also has deep experience working with resident actors and artisans,” Everyman Theatre board president Bryan Rakes said in a statement. The theatre’s Board of Directors conducted a nationwide search to identify a successor for Everyman’s founding artistic director, Vincent M. Lancisi, who will retire in June. Lancisi expressed his excitement for Weinbrenner to take over the artistic direction of Everyman. “Everyman’s Resident Company is central to our mission, and we’re excited to see it flourish under Brandon’s leadership,” Lancisi said in a statement. “I am thrilled that our Board has hired Brandon, a respected and admired artistic leader, and I am excited to see him take the reins. I’m not just retiring; I’m joining the audience. This is an incredible moment for us in Baltimore and for the arts community!” Since joining the nonprofit Alley Theatre in 2013, Weinbrenner has directed box office record-breaking plays including “Seared,” “Clue,” and “Sherlock Holmes and the Case of the Jersey Lily.” He also earned Best Director nominations for his direction of “The Humans” at the Alley Theatre,” as well as “The Royale” and “The Children” both at Rec Room Arts, another Houston theatre. In total, he has directed more than 25 plays, assistant directed 13 others, and served as a producer or consultant on many other works. Weinbrenner co-founded the Alley All New Festival; led the formation of the University of Houston/Alley Theatre MFA in Acting program; and was a member of the inaugural team for The Ground Floor, a play development program at Berkeley Rep, where he served as the Bret C. Harte Directing Fellow. He earned his BFA in Acting from the University of Minnesota/ Guthrie Theatre’s Acting Program. “Serving Alley Theatre for over a decade has crystallized what I believe makes a vibrant theatrical home: community, collaboration, and respect,” Weinbrenner said. In the next act of his career at Everyman, Weinbrenner will join a theatre known for featuring an ensemble of professional actors who perform regularly each season, an aspect with which he is familiar from his time at the Alley. “For 35 years, the team at Everyman Theatre has built an institution grounded in these same principles,” he said. “I am honored to help carry forward Everyman’s tradition of ‘great stories, well told’ for the Baltimore community.” Each year, the theatre offers more than 200 nights of programming, welcomes more than 30,000 visitors, and contributes approximately $12 million in economic impact to Baltimore’s cultural economy. Weinbrenner will work with Marissa LaRose, Everyman’s managing director since April 2020, to co-lead the theatre’s more than 150 full- and part-time staff, actors, designers, and teaching artists. “Brandon leads with admirable passion and authenticity that complements the Everyman style,” LaRose said in a statement. “This, alongside his commitment to locally created artistic excellence, makes him an exciting partner to lead with as we collaborate on innovative ways to advance the theatre for Baltimore. I’m confident our joint leadership will propel Everyman strongly forward in the next chapter of this beloved organization!” ...read more read less
