Wednesday, hundreds of students across the Bay Area took part in student walkouts to protest ICE – and more demonstrations are expected Friday as a part of a nationwide protest against ICE.
At the corner of Story And King roads in San Jose, groups of students from Overfelt High took to the stre
ets to protest ICE and the recent deadly ICE agent shootings in Minneapolis.
“It’s really important for me because I want to show my community we really care, the future generations care, not just something we’re going to let happen, you know?” said Jilisa, a student.
“What this administration is doing is not ok, and we’re not going to stay silent, and we just want more people to get motivated by that,” said Jonathan, a student.
Similar student walkouts took place in the East Bay, with hundreds of students walking out in the San Lorenzo Unified School District.
“We came out here today [to] change what’s going on,” said Jolia Bossette, East Bay Arts High School student.
More school walkouts are expected across the Bay Area Friday for a nationwide shutdown in solidarity with Minnesota, which has become the epicenter of federal immigration operations following the deadly ICE agent shootings of Renee Good and Alex Pretti.
“We’re answering the call here in the Bay Area, we’re saying no work, and no shopping, and no school,” said Luna Osleger Montanez, community organizer.
On the steps of San Francisco’s City Hall, community organizers explained why they will be taking part on Friday’s call to action.
“This is the moment that we all join together to demand the end of ICE by the power of the people,” said Nadia Rahman, with the council on American Islamic Relations.
In Oakland, students at Life Academy are spreading the word on their social media pages about taking part in Friday’s national walkout.
“They’re seeing the same things we’re seeing, many of them are from immigrant backgrounds, so they’re scared and they’re pissed,” said Carla Green, with Life Academy Oakland.
Green is a school administrator at the academy and she says while the school can’t legally sanction a student walkout, they’re offering their support to students.
“Right now we’re talking to them about what it does it mean to have a march, what does it look like to keep people safe walking down the street,” Green said.
According to organizers for the nationwide strike, hundreds of organizations and students’ groups across the country are expected to participate in Friday’s protests.
