Coyote spotted swimming near Alcatraz Island makes it to the island
Jan 28, 2026
The coyote that was seen swimming near the southern edge of the Alcatraz Island made it to the island, and it appears to be thriving.
The National Park Service confirmed the animal is there, and that it appears to be the same one seen swimming near the shore a few weeks ago.
The National Park
Service says that this is the first known coyote on the island since the park service took over in 1972.
Staff members are keeping an eye on it, to try and better understand how it is surviving.
They’re also watching to see what impact it may have on local wildlife, including the local seabird colony.
The park service also says the “new inmate” is not impacting tours and visitors in any way.
Janet Kessler, a self-taught naturalist who’s been tracking the San Francisco coyote population for more than 20 years, saw down with NBC Bay Area to talk about the Alcatraz Island “new inmate”. Watch the full interview in the video player above.
