San Bernardino Valley College men’s basketball team powers past Chaffey

RANCHO CUCAMONGA — Every practice, every rep and every possession is important to Quincy Brewer.
The San Bernardino Valley College men’s basketball coach has not changed in that way in his 17 seasons, and this year the Wolverines remain unbeaten in conference play after a 82-62 win at Chaffey on
Wednesday night.
“It’s important to get wins,” Brewer said. “It’s always tough to play on the road but I think the guys did a very good job of coming out with intensity.”
Newcomer Duante Murphy led four players in double figures with 17 points, 11 assists and seven rebounds as SBVC (17-5 overall) jumped to an early lead and held on in the second half for its 10th consecutive Inland Empire Athletic Conference victory.
“(Murphy) is playing right now the way we intended him to play,” Brewer said. “He’s big, strong, physical and quick, so he’s actually turning into the kid that we though we recruited.”
Murphy, a 6-foot-3 point forward from Australia, struggled early in the season but has made five consecutive starts and is averaging 16.6 points, 7.2 assists, 4.8 rebounds and 2.6 steals per game over the stretch.
“I’m out there, the team is thriving and I’m having a good time,” Murphy said. “This team has big goals and I just want to help them.”
Sophomore guard Semaj Morrison came off the bench to score a team-high 16 points but Chaffey (10-12, 4-6) lost their second consecutive and fourth in five games.
“We didn’t play a clean game and we weren’t able to recover from an early deficit,” Chaffey second-year coach Mateu Vilakazi said. “Their length got to us and we didn’t do a good job with our movements, or attacking the gaps with our speed.”
Freshman guard Lincoln Liggins (Arlington High) was 5 of 6 – including a 3-pointer – in the first half as SBVC jumped out to an 8-0 lead. Pushed by Liggins’ early energy, the Wolverines led by as many as 18 points before halftime.
“Defense is our main focus right now (and) holding the other team down,” said Liggins, who added four steals and four rebounds. “We’re stay together and staying locked in.”
Freshman wing Collin Ingram (Murrieta Valley High) scored nine of his 11 points in the second half as Chaffey clawed back to within eight points, but a thunderous fast-break dunk from San Bernardino’s Stanley Thomas III (Etiwanda High) made it a 10-point game with 5-and-a-half minutes remaining.
Thomas (17 points) was 5 of 5 from the free-throw line in the second half, and freshman guard Jaden Riley was 4 for 4 as SBVC extended its lead. The Wolverines were 24 of 28 from the stripe overall.
Sophomore center Jude Brideba led all players with nine rebounds to go with eight points and a season-high four blocks for San Bernardino.
