Jan 28, 2026
WESTVILLE, IND. (WOWO) A 19-year-old Michigan City man is facing felony charges after authorities say he attempted to smuggle drugs and other contraband into Westville Correctional Facility.
According to reporting by WNDU, Halton Duke is charged with dealing in methamphetamine and trafficking with a
n inmate following a January 20 incident at the LaPorte County prison.
Court documents cited by the South Bend Tribune say a prison shift supervisor reported seeing a suspect throw a duffel bag and backpack over an interior fence behind two prison dormitories. Investigators say a short time later, a prison security unit spotted Duke running toward the outer fence line.
Authorities allege Duke pulled up the bottom portion of the fence and crawled underneath before fleeing the area. Investigators later followed footprints in the snow, which led them to a nearby smoke shop along U.S. 421, where Duke was found hiding.
Prosecutors say the bags contained more than 38 grams of methamphetamine, 31 individual bags of marijuana, two 16-ounce packages of tobacco, two bags of THC-infused gummies and 14 cellular devices.
Investigators also reported finding cell phone chargers and adapters, vape cartridges containing nicotine, rolling papers, socks, boxer briefs, headphones, scalp cream, screwdriver sets, a lighter, acetone, castor oil, super glue and papers saturated with an unknown substance.
Online court records show Duke is being held on a $50,000 cash-only bond. His next court appearance is scheduled for Friday morning.
WNDU reports Duke’s arrest follows several similar cases in recent years involving attempts to smuggle drugs and contraband into Westville Correctional Facility and the Indiana State Prison, including incidents involving drones.
